Product Description The Chasseur Cast Iron range has been manufactured to the highest standards by skilled craftsmen, using time honoured techniques at our foundry in the Champagne Ardennes region of France, for over 70 years. Today these age old techniques have been updated, using modern technology where possible, to ensure that the foundry is able to produce consistently top quality products whilst reducing the environmental impact on their surrounding area. The environmental issues have been addressed through the recycling of both raw materials and materials used in the manufacture as well as the installation of a super efficient furnace with a sophisticated filtering system, making it one of the cleanest in Europe.
Heavy but rapidly becoming essential equipment Sent: 18 May 2008 Don't know about how you meaties cook, but my interest in this pan was purely in reducing the fat content of an occasional indulgence in fried vegetables. I snapped one up when it hit half price and after 3 days I'm still very happy with it. It is heavy though- and because it doesn't have a long handle I found it really difficult to pick up when it was hot- I'm used to a Le Creuset frying pan so it's really just how the centre of gravity works out that makes it awkward to pick up one handed. I stuck to just using the handle to adjust the position over the hob and letting it cool completely before I moved it.
It does take a little time to season the pan. My cooking strategy is an adoption of what you would do on a barbecue- smear the side you're cooking with oil lightly applied with a pastry brush. When you put the veg down you do have to lift it a little with a fork after say 10 seconds to make sure that it doesn't stick to the grill line. I'm still learning really.
My other half was very impressed with the taste of aubergines, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes- he said they were far more flavoursome - much less masked by the taste of the oil. I liked cooking with a square pan for a change- everything seemed to fit in so much better. You do get a fairly high production of fumes though - so whack up the extractor or open a window before you cook.

ouch! Sent: 21 July 2006 The handle gets VERY hot and could do with being a bit longer(I have BIG hands :0) ) It cooks beautifully and the heat retention is phenomenal thus saving on the amount of fuel used to cook no doubt. Looks great but you need strong arms to lift it! At this price it's a steal...just wish it had a heat proof handle.
